hotel open for business

This morning was like waking up on Christmas as I found several emails with links to the full version of Hotel Chevalier. If you’re among those that haven’t been able to see it yet, click here for a 160 MB WMV version. Thanks to Jason, Kyle and Gianluca.

What do I think? I think its the best film she’s been in since Closer and also the best performance since that film. I got more out of those 13 minutes than the whole of the SW prequels.

I’ve been quite clear about my man-love for Wes Anderson and this short has the Wes trademarks (the gorgeous camera movement, the impeccable framing, perfect use of music, the unexpected dry humour that gets me every time – “that was a long pause” and, of course, the trademark slo-mo ending) but its also some very new territory for Wes. I can’t remember him ever creating such a sensual, adult, loving but damaged mood. Natalie’s character is also not typically “Wes World” but I think thats part of what makes her character so interesting.

I was sad when those credits rolled because I wasn’t near ready to leave that world. It’s actually kinda frustrating but I guess that makes for a successful short.

One other thing, I’m beginning to feel that Natalie is far superior playing characters who have a semblance of control and power about them. Well I’m fully convinced now and hopefully she can continue the trend when playing Anne Boleyn.

I’m sure opinions are going to be very divided on this one and have set up a poll to gauge them.

I realize we haven’t even heard back from anyone who attended but by all accounts nothing interesting was asked of Nat. Tsk tsk.
