What the hell am I looking at?

By February 14, 2009Site-news

You’re looking at the new design, bitches!

Since its our 9th anniversary and birthday I thought that, instead of the usual recap of our time in charge of the site, let’s instead look forward.

Even though the new design wasn’t entirely ready, we decided to throw common sense out the window and get “something” up today.

So, while it is up it’s definitely not finished – hence the “beta” on the banner.

Click on to read a few important notes regarding the new design.

– The Image Gallery will still load with the old layout. This will be fixed within the next few days.

– The Latest News images don’t line up perfectly. This will be fixed soon as well.

– There’s going to be a lot of content (including the archives) in the Everything Else menu link. Currently there is nothing in it. Content will start to be added during the week.

– There is currently no link to the Pic Battle from the main page. We still need to work that out but there are plenty of news items linking to it.

– Photo of the Week is currently a bit of a placeholder. The idea is to pick a gallery for the week and have 3 or 4 of the best images from that gallery rotating. Then the next week a new gallery link and a new batch of rotating pics.

– The banner and banner image will probably rotate but that’s near the bottom of the to do list and there will be just a few choice rotations.

– There are other new features planned. RSS and tags (to making finding old updates easier) is definitely on the agenda and Rachel is egging for an “upcoming and recent” movies section for the side.

– You’ll now be able to see how many comments have been left for an update.

– We’ve added a permanent Social Bookmarking button after every update. PLEASE use it to share important updates with the rest of the net. It’s really important for the site’s survival and prosperity.

I think that pretty much covers it. Please leave us your feedback in the comments section and let us know if any parts of the site are not working since the switch over.

A huge thanks to Diane (check out her web design site here), Kris and Rachel.

UPDATE

– You can add Comments Section doesn’t work to that list of problems. Will hopefully be fixed later. In the mean time you can leave comments in this forum thread.

the new format sucks large, please go back….

  • papari says:

holy crap!! I was looking at the old layout pressed F5 as usual and damn! very nice!

  • kelvin says:

I love it all, except for the placement of the top ad. It’s just a bit distracting, but I’m sure it’s probably the best spot for it.

  • kelvin says:

Also, the links in “Latest News” don’t take you to that story, or is this more like a scroll that just has little updates and doesn’t function as a link??

  • kelvin says:

ok, nevermind it appears to be working now…

  • N-a-t says:

i love this layout, haven’t seen such a beautiful one for long:)

  • Dazza says:

Image gallery should be working now and obviously the comments as well.

  • Dazza says:

Latest news images now aligned a bit better. Still need to add the links to older updates at the bottom of the main page and the awful teal graphic above and below the comment box needs to be jettisoned asap.

  • Dazza says:

Okay, the links to older pages have been added as well.

  • Frigoooo says:

looks good, but i dislike the big advertising-banner at the first page. maybee you could place it a little bit more lower..

  • Dazza says:

Its a tricky size to try and implement nicely. The other option was directly beneath the first update but I found that far more intrusive. Believe me, I wish we didn’t have to have any ads at all (like we did for several years) but the reality is we need it quite badly.

I appreciate that visitors will obviously never “enjoy” ads but hopefully most of you will at least understand that they wouldn’t be on the site without good reason.

I’m gonna look into replacing the one ad with an amazon widget highlighting items that Natalie fans would be interested in.

Sorry gentlemen, It’s really an awful design.

  • Mysha says:

This design is just weird. The previous one was better. Much better.

  • Tardy says:

Yowza. You know I’m not a big fan of change. Every time a site I frequent decides to throw on a new coat of paint I always end up wishing they hadn’t. Even if the original layout wasn’t that great I’m like “argh”. I guess there’s a first time for everything because I’m really digging this. Still needs some fine tuning but for an unfinished work..gotta give some props.

  • Dazza says:

Eatpaste, I am SHOCKED that you don’t like it. I really thought that this time we’d finally get a positive comment out of you. Oh well, maybe next month ๐Ÿ˜€

As soon as we’ve polished things up (its definitely not 100% yet) we’ll do a nice big poll (I love nice big polls) to see the overall opinion of things.

Change IS tough at first but I find people get used to it fairly quickly. Every time we’ve done a new layout there has been a sizable amount of detractors. Even recently when we changed the update system and the gallery.

  • omgzrachel says:

I’m honestly surprised by all of the negative reactions. The previous layout looked dated by about 10 years.

  • Agie says:

Well I’m surprised by so many negative comments about new layout. I think it’s nice and it’s a good idea to change site’s look after such long time. I loved old one of course, but maybe after some changes in future time, everybody will get used to it.

  • Dazza says:

Don’t worry, Rach, of the comments so far 9 gave it a thumbs up and 2 gave it a thumbs down. And one of them was eatpaste who gripes about anything and everything. Those who have messaged me and posted in the forum have also been quite positive.

The negative comments just tend to stand out more.

Appreciate the kind comments everyone and all constructive criticism is most welcome. We won’t please everyone but we’re gonna try our best.

    O_o

    Looks so professional!

  • plop says:

Ok. My first reaction was “NOOOOOO!!!” But then I remembered how we use to get habituated to new things, so I guess is a matter of time.

I think this shape looks more alike others sites I have seen, so I feel like if there were less personality.

I miss the black color -in my opinion helped to stay seeing the site per hours- even if I am not sure if the grey could do the same.

I also miss the long updates… Ok, all this doesn’t deserve an answer. I guess I am only releasing the pressure inside… ๐Ÿ™

Also -maybe because I am 36?- I don’t share the opinion that it is necessarily wrong for something to look like from ten years ago. But hey, that is just me, and only an opinion.

  • dioxio2 says:

    Well, I LOVE it !
The previous layout looked old XD. This one is much more up-to-date. Good job ^^.

    Aude.

  • sak says:

What a pleasant surprise! The new layout looks gorgeous.
    Bravo to everyone involved.

  • arf15beagle says:

In the words of Mr. Horse, “No sir, I don’t like it.”

  • jesslv74 says:

As I’ve had more time to digest the look of the site…

I know ad placement as you said is tricky b/c of the size, but I think a good and more logical place for the ad would be under the Google ads on the left column, and moving the picture of the day where the ad is. It’s just weird there.

I’m also disappointed to hear that rotating banners is on the bottom of the list. Why is that? I think having the same banner or only a few banners makes the site kinda boring.

I forget, what is “everything else” for?

I still don’t like the pic of Natalie on the top left looking all sexy and suggestive. but I guess that’s gonna stay. I’m not being a prude…to me it looks like the site is an “all about Natalie being this hot chick and we’re gonna show picture of her looking sexy and talk about superficial things,” and I think the site is more than that. But at first glance if I came here, that’s what Id’ think. But oh well, your choice.

Glad to hear about RSS and tagging, and for the most part I like the color scheme, it’s simple and the gray isn’t jarring or too bright or too dark. However, I am sad to see that awful teal color between comments…I think the blue that you have pretty much everywhere else, like the When What section, would look better. The teal makes it not look as new as it’s been used on here for ages.

So I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either…somewhere in the middle I guess. We’ll see though…as time goes along we get used to things, and as you said, you’re still making improvements.

The new layout looks great! Guys, you are doing a really good job.

  • Dazza says:

Thanks for the detailed reply, Jess.

Ad placement on the side – I actually had that in mind but when Diane put together the first mock up I just loved how much more space there now was for the updates themselves. Most sites use it on the side (check egotastic for example) but that results in a really thin area for updates.

Rotations at the bottom of the to do list – Well because its very much a luxury. Rather deal with the necessities before tackling the luxuries.

Evertyhing Else – If you can’t find a link for something, go to everything else. As I was putting together a list of menu’s I realized it was getting a bit out of hand. Rather use one page for “everything else”.

Too sexy – I dunno. To me that’s quite an elegant and classy image. It won’t be there forever though.

Teal – Have already mentioned its top of the list of changes. Because it wasn’t used on the front page it was simply overlooked. I hate it as well and it’ll be replaced ASAP.

Pip, there is a very small board for a handful of the old timers. Mail me and I’ll hook ya up.
