    Qui est sur le point…?

    Dear Natalie Portman,
There are many of us (Jews and non-Jews), are desperate to see your film.
We are, horrifically, aware that very few movie theatres, both here on LI, and in NYC,
are showing it. We are especially upset that the Cinema Arts Theatre, in Huntington
( a publically funded ” .ORG” ), is not showing it , despite numerous requests by cinema subscribers.
I have written to the director, Charlotte Sky and herewith send you a copy of my letter.
I would appreciate your response, as this is a very important issue to many of us, both here and in NYC.
Thank you for having the guts and the creative energy to make this very important film!
    With Love, Elaine Mayers Salkaln

     DEAR CHARLOTTE,

I am herewith presenting a formal request for you to
please show Natalie Portman’s film.”A Tale of Love and Darkness,”
at the cinema  ASAP, hopefully, in September..
The recent reviews are wonderful__ from A.O.Scott in the NEW YORK TIMES,
THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, NPR, PULSE. (See below),
and Newsday, which has given it 3-1/2 stars
( which many of the films you select to show, do not get.)

AND ALSO A REQUEST TO INVITE HER TO BE A GUEST SPEAKER
FOR ONE OF YOUR WONDERFUL  STAR APPEARANCES,
TO ACCOMPANY A SHOWING OF HER FILM.
It would be a  packed audience !

Portman is a brave new entry in a very small cadre of WOMEN directors
and she deserves a big welcome
She is also one of Long island”s own, having grown up here in nearby Syosset,
after emigrating from Israel at the age of 3.  In addition,
    her father, a well known gynecologist, and her mother, an artist, still live here;
and she has a home, herself, in Sea Cliff, In addition to homes in LA, and Paris.
I am sure, the family has  been patrons of the Cinema., over the years.
See her story, which I shall send in a separate Email.
    She is a super star__ her “Black Swan” was brilliant;
I loved her in “The Professional.”
There are many local Long Islanders who want to see this film,
who are IMPASSIONED TO SEE IT !

Many of us are seniors who don’t get into the city very often..
The cinema gives us welcome access to so many films
that we would ordinarily not get to see.
I should note, here, that in scanning the film club audience,
it is made up, mainly, of seniors.
it is also clear that the audience is also almost 100% Jewish.
This film, for those of us who are Jews, will be an almost religious experience,
as it is based on the memoir by Amos Oz,
one of the major literary giants of the 20th Century.
THIS FILM, in the future, promises to be cherished, on parr with Leon Uris’s “EXODUS.”
Amos Oz is considered a Liberal Israeli,
as opposed to the so-called Conservative Israelis,
so this should fit into the criteria that you deem acceptable.

I am not giving up on this request, Charlotte.
This is a very important issue, not only to me, but to alot of people__
    many loyal subscribers.
I shall, if necessary, get signatures for a petition.

You, Vic, and Dylan have worked long and hard to create this glorious mecca
dedicated to the joys of Film-making and film appreciation.
And for that we are, all of us, full of appreciation.
( And you know what Alice Walker wrote in “The Color Purple,”
when Cealli spread out her arms, pointing to a field of purple flowers,
    and shouted, “God Loves  appreciation!”)

The roaring success of David Schwartz’s  Film Club
is a  gigantic testimonial to your efforts.

    We  thank you.
BUT, alas, MANY of us are extremely upset that you have shown a strong,
personal,  AND YES, DEFIANT BIAS, AGAINST ISRAEL!
    This has not gone un-noticed.
Therefore, I want you to know,
I am not giving up on this request, Charlotte.
This is a very important issue, not only to me, but to alot of people_
    many loyal subscribers,
of whom there are quite a few who not Jewish.
I shall, if necessary, get signatures on a petition.

    Sincerely,
    Elaine Mayers Salkaln
